Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Wayne M — 04 Oct 2017
Hacksaw Ridge is a big war film writ large. But it cries out for some measure of subtlety. It's a true story of a World War Two hero and it's a great story but this isn't a great film. It comes as basically two parts with the first being set stateside as we follow Desmond Doss in his rural life and his basic training.
The second half is set on Okinawa and the war scenes are graphic to say the least. Andrew Garfield is solid in the lead role but there is not much nuance here. So it is enjoyable if you look at it as a hero's story but if you want a rich experience that look elsewhere.
