Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Dashtag M — 13 Mar 2017
After being kicked out of Hollywood and losing his dignity, I gotta give Mel Gibson credit for coming back with an "IN YOUR FACE" movie to the Academy, in order to get nominated. "Hacksaw Ridge" is the story about a skinny white boy named Desmond Doss who wants to fight in World War II.
Desmond wants to be a medic in order to serve his country, and his excuse is "I can't stay home while they all go out and fight for me," which I guess gets him to the point he wants to save everyone.
After receiving permission to be a medic, he saves about 5-10 people in the first battle, 10-15 in the second and after that there aren't any more battles. The reason why I give this movie a low score is because it has about an hour and 10 minutes of talking, which is really boring if you saw the trailer.
When the battle starts, it is a COMPLETE slaughterhouse. The blood and gore is totally unnecessary and the fighting is no where near realistic. After watching "Saving Private Ryan," this movie is almost laughable.
You can say that the second half is entertaining, but with all that slo-mo, freeze frames, loud sounds, blood and guts flying out it just turns into too much! Some war movies can be fantasies, but Hacksaw Ridge was a true story! The battle sequences and the violences are just ridiculously cheesy and make no sense.
The performance from Andrew Garfield is alright, but everyone else is just alright. I don't see much character change between any of them, and by the end I was really waiting for a good fight scene.
"Hacksaw Ridge" is a very stupid war movie, and did not deserve any Oscar nominations, even if the technical stuff was pretty good. Rated R.
