Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Jan S — 23 Jul 2017
Deeply moving film. The carnage is very real, the soldiers very human. And the bravery and commitment of Desmond Doss beyond words. The religious aspect is low key, but it becomes obvious, as Doss continues his mission time after time, that the medic must be protected by the hand of God.
He crawls through the dead and the dying, looking for soldiers to save, even as the Japanese are also walking through the battlefield, looking for survivors to kill. Deeply, deeply moving. Mel Gibson makes extremely disturbing films, but ones with a message that somehow make the painful experience well worthwhile.
