Review of Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009) by Monic T — 10 Nov 2011
This was definitely not what I was expecting. First off when the movie begins and I see Stage 6 films I cringed. Since they responsible for putting out some of the worst direct to video shit I have seen.
But a few years ago something switched and quality started pumping out of them. Like Boondock Saints II, Felon, The Dark Country, and the one that really surprised me was Moon. They are still putting out shit movies.
Don't get me wrong. But there are gems popping up now and again. This is one of them. I don't know if it was growing up with dogs or crying like a girl with a skinned knee at lassie. But this one got to me.
It's a very touching story. And as I've said before you can make a great movie out of anything as long as you have the story. Sometimes they show things through Hachi's eyes as opposed to human eyes, which helps you relate to him and understand how he felt and what he thought then, as well as emphasizes that Hachi is the main character of the movie.
And another bit of realism that I really enjoyed is that the dog is shown in a very realistic fashion. The film doesn't add in cute and funny that is outside of a dogs element to get a cheap laugh or cute moment.
Not a fan of Richard Gere but he did not bother me in this one. This film with stick with me for quite a long time. Very well done indeed. Lasse Hallstrom I applaud you, good sir.
