Review of Gymkata (1985) by Ville I — 01 May 2010
An Olympic gymnast is drafted by a secret agent organization to infiltrate Parmistan, a medieval kingdom ruled by ninjas and a king who looks like Viktor Klimenko. His objective: Win the Game, a secret and deadly contest where people mainly climb/hang on to ropes while ninjas shoot them with arrows. Why? Who knows - at some point there is talk of establishing some Star Wars radar site, but it's not really important.
Gymnast fights bad guys with Olympic gymnast moves and falls in love with a fairly ugly princess in a cat-suit. Other contestants die horribly, mostly while climbing ropes or in the brilliant Village of the Damned, where Parmistan sends it's mental patients to practice cannibalism.
Weird little piece of "gymsploitation" that has too many chase sequences to really stand out, but worth a look for the Village sequence alone (this is the movie the Resident Evil 4 guys saw).
