Review of Gunless (2010) by I Don't Know W — 28 Jun 2011
Not expecting much after having watched the trailers might have something to do with it but... I actually enjoyed this film!
I'm not a big Paul Gross fan and I was expecting a purely silly take on Canada during the time period but was actually privy to a lightly comedic drama with a smatter of action set in wild west Canada where the "Gunless" name of the film isn't entirely what you might expect it to mean.
Sure there is some slapstick, characatures, and dump moments but there are also some very smart self referential moments and witty winks and nods. Considering the amount of mild comedic moments, the film never truly feels like a full blown comedy. It's got the mandatory love story, the stranger in a strange land acceptance theme and the coming of age/maturing of the main character, the turning of a new leaf if you will.
Add the fact that this film has a pretty awesome group of Canadian actors with the likes of Graham Greene, Paul Gross, Sienna Guillory and Callum Keith Rennie and maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised at how entertaining this film was going to be.
Worth checking out if you like a light hearted western with a Canadian flare.
