Review of Gunga Din (1939) by Alan L — 22 May 2009
An enthusiastic, if problematic swashbuckling rendition of Kipling's Cartridge war adventure. Helpful reference for Temple of Doom fans. While the special effects and violence hardly thrill our numbed modern curiosities, the paternalism and exoticsm is rank enough scandalize our sensibilities.
Note: Sam Jaffe=self-sacrificing title character, not quite from the subcontinent. Still, somehow, this peek into classic hollywood moves us to root for "the better man than I am.".
