Review of Gummo (1997) by Akil J — 05 Jun 2008
Wow... if you're only interested in seeing a "normal" film, with the usual popcorn bullshit, than run away far. If on the other hand, you want to see a beautiful experiment, focusing on the world of a group of broken people left in the middle of a tornado torn southern american town (reminded me of the whole Katrina debacle), this is it.
These people, even at their worst (drunk destroying furniture, killing cats, or selling themselves), are never judged, insulted, or exploited. They are just there, in the middle of ugliness, and seeing them trying to survive is beautiful.
An incredible, thought provoking film.
