Review of Gummo (1997) by Graham L — 20 Jul 2008
No one can accuse director Korine of failing to achieve what he set out to do - to shock, offend and confuse people. Fortunately, there's more to this film than there initially appears to be; what begins as a series of seemingly pointless, surreal vignettes evolves into a bizarre vision of smalltown America caught in a sort of hellish vacuum of depravity.
It remains ambiguous to its last frame, hence the heated debate over whether this film is artfully deranged satire or worthless garbage. I'm not sure if I've made up my mind about that question yet.
