Because I've seen so many films, I often mistakenly believe that I won't ever be surprised by films. Sure, you can be surprised by films watching them a second time, but it just isn't the same as watching a film for the first time.

Gummo was a film I went to watch knowing very little about. I didn't really have any high expectations. But as the film began, I realized that I could not remove my eyes from the screen. The characters were marvelously bizarre and the scenes were so unique and frightening.

No, there aren't any characters that the audience can really like or root for, but it's not that kind of movie. It seems that people weigh the quality of movies by their personal ability to love, relate to, or root for a character in the movie.

I didn't love, relate to, or root for any characters in this film, but I certainly enjoyed it and appreciated it as the strangely beautiful film that it is. At one point towards the end of the movie, I had a dumb guy smile on my face because of how surprised I was.

Surprised that I couldn't think of anything else like it. Is it a film that I want to own and watch over and over? Not quite, but I'm really happy I did watch it. If a film can hold your attention and keep you engaged, then it doesn't matter what its content is.

You can begin to see things that others won't.
