Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by Alina N — 28 Jun 2008
This is a very sweet story.
I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that the screenplay didn't take the easy way out: the parents only oppose a mixed-race marriage because they're racist. it was refreshing to see a script with a real level of depth to the conflict, and a realistic resolution.
I was also very impressed by the performances. katharine hepburn is a believable "good cop" as the mother, and sidney poitier is so smooth, you'll wonder if he practiced that charming smile in front of the mirror. and spencer tracy...no matter how frustrated you get with him, he's an adorable old man who's really looking out for his daughter. for a movie with a conflict that was very current at the time it was made, it sure manages to maintain the humor.
It could have been shorter, in my opinion, but that's my only complaint.
