Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by Gavin S — 15 May 2013
Great performances from Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy (in his last role before his death). The real life relationship between Hepburn and Tracy makes their role as an old married couple so authentic and believable.
Poitier just oozes class, dignity and grace, something that was obviously required for a role such as this. People may say this movie hasn't aged well, but other than a few dated 60s dance moves and lingo, it seems just as relevant today as it might have back then.
If you were to make the same movie about Gay marriage, it would raise a lot of the same questions. It's an honest look at the issue of inter-racial marriage from 1967, when civil rights battles were flaring up all over.
In less than 2 hours you can't solve those issues, but it's a very authentic examination, with great work from it's leads. (Hepburn won her 2nd Oscar). Definitely worth watching, if nothing else for the performances.
