Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by Grant S — 26 Nov 2013
This was probably quite profound in 1967, but it hasn't aged at all well. Now seems quite patronising and irrelevant. Even in 1967, it wouldn't have been a great movie: trite, filled with stereotypes and too many speeches.
Mixed bag of performances. Sidney Poitier gives a solid, though maybe a bit too aloof, performance. Katharine Hepburn is good but Spencer Tracy seems too formulaic in his actions. Katharine Houghton is irritating as the daughter.
Still, it tells a story that had to be told, and came out when not everyone in the US had the same rights and freedoms.
