Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by Michael T — 21 Apr 2014
A really moving film about race and social implications concerning interracial marriage (an issue particularly close to me) from a time when the civil rights movement was still under-way. In terms of Hollywood's history, this movie came out towards the beginning of the so called "American New Wave", a time when American film-makers realized the full potential of the film medium, stopped making benign, family friendly, anti-intellectual entertainment cinema (50's bullshit cinema) and began to challenge their audiences with films that were either difficult, important or fearless.
This movie unabashedly calls out the older generations and is a full on F-U from the Baby-Boomers to their parents. This movie stands the test of time which may be a good thing for its legacy, but is, unfortunately, an indication of what little progress we have made from a time that feels so long ago.
