Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by Sean L — 07 Jan 2018
The movie's got heart, and doesn't take itself seriously at all, but I still find myself wishing it were a bit deeper of a story. It tells a nice tale about family and friendship, but a few of the main characters feel like easily identifiable character archetypes than fully fleshed out and unique.
Batista's Drax and Vin Diesel's Groot are at least intentionally simple, and feels right, but that means there will never be much more to their characters than what's on the surface. Zoe Saldana is forgettable as Gamora in this movie, though I don't know whether it's because she's not that great an actress or the script just doesn't give her much to do this time around.
The movie really lives and dies by Pratt's Peter Quill, and he does a fine job here. I almost wish there were fewer characters so it could focus on him a bit more. It's better than Guardians of the Galaxy has any right to be, considering the obscurity of its source material, and I'm glad I watched it, but it's just nothing especially memorable.
