Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by Kyle P — 12 Dec 2017
The first time I saw this movie in a theater, I remember having a fond opinion of it. I can now only attribute that to the fact that the very beautiful, fun sci-fi visuals distracted me from how dull, obnoxious, and straight up stupid most of he dialogue is.
Gaurdians 2 desperately, desperately wants to be very funny, but its relentless humor jihad will start to wear on anyone who enjoys even a sliver of subtlety in their jokes. Every joke, every bit of ceaseless chattering banter between the characters is so on the nose and blatant. There is an interesting emotional core somewhere in this film, but it's smothered by irritating writing and the usual mind-numbing-and-not-in-a-good-way stupid action scenes that go on way too long. Do people even really want those? Are there people who still crave the big, explosion-riddled, high octane, loud music, exhausting ending? I know I'm sick of it.
