Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) by Gerard V — 22 Jul 2018
The first film was impressive for being a rollickingly good time while having strong character arcs for each of the heroes and a real freshness to this new part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While a sequel may not be expected to maintain the sense of originality it also lacks the character work; a couple of reveals aside we don't get to learn anything new about our heroes and they are left in the same place at the end as when we saw them last time.
The unique humour also seems more forced this time, luckily this world and these characters are still fun to spend time with even if they don't go anywhere. Combined with the charisma of the cast, strong direction (the opening sequence is something to behold) and another great soundtrack this is still enjoyable, even if the shine is starting to come off.
