Review of Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) by Sam B — 18 Dec 2017
I honestly was very skeptical about this film (I believed it was gonna be a complete flop). But after positive word of mouth and strong box office returns, I gave it a chance and instantly loved this film once Peter Quill began dancing through the ruins.
The music fits the tone of the film, the humor definitely lands, the character development is strong, and it's just an all-around fun film. Though it has loose ties to the overall MCU (Thanos' appearance, background on Infinity Stones, The Collector, etc.
), this movie could definitely work even if it wasn't connected to the MCU. Though the movie features a quite underwhelming, generic villain, Ronan has direct ties to Gamora and Drax, which makes the plot much more dynamic.
It's also heavy on the humor, but in the context of the film, it strongly works in this film, unlike in the Transformers series. Who would've known that the Guardians of the Galaxy would surge in popularity after this movie? This is one of Marvel's best films!
