Review of Grudge Match (2013) by Thomas W — 09 Jun 2014
There may be a few laughs here in Grudge Match but for the most part it is just a rather odd movie about two 60+ year old actors who hold such a grudge towards the other that they'd risk their life and well-being to climb back into a boxing ring for another chance of bashing in the skull of their avowed nemesis .
.. for the right price, that is. It is just another example of how THE most important thing in the world and life IS money and how we'll do anything to obtain more of it. Robert De Niro (Raging Bull) and Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) play one-time boxing rivals who have taken different paths in life after their "golden days" in the ring ended.
De Niro's Billy 'The Kid' McDonnen is a successful, tough-talking yet sleazy owner of some car dealerships while Stallone's "Razor" is a down-on-his-luck factory worker looking after his ailing father played by Alan Arkin (Argo).
The two have a lot of pent-up emotions but most of their feud now stems from the fact that Billy "won" the girl oh-so-many years ago even though she knew Razor was the better man. She is played by Kim Basinger (L.
A. Confidential). The guys decide to hold their Grudge Match to earn some much-needed money (in Razor's case); but will they even survive to receive and or spend it? It becomes a rather standard and formulaic drama with some bizarre-looking FX shots of the two actors in their younger years playing boxers (in both Raging Bull and Rocky) which makes the entire film come across as a gimmick.
It is little else.
