So everyone keeps going down into this pit and then climbing out and then going into the pit and then hearing the bear and then climbing out and..... The pit isn't that big but apparently there is some cosmic force that prevents them from doing something really off the wall.

Like go around the pit. And a tire iron is pretty useless as a weapon against a grizzly.
