Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Anne F — 19 Sep 2009
Timothy Treadwell spent a large part of 15 years living near grizzly bears and made many hours of film of the bears and himself. This is a profoundly disturbing film - we know that he and his girlfriend were eaten by the bears, and see his increasing madness in his belief that he has developed a unique relationship with the animals.
The footage of the bears didn't fill me with joy at the beauty of nature, and it was a relief to hear the film's director (Herzog) talk of the malevolence of the animals that Treadwell was utterly (and creepily) infatuated with.
