Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Lyric B — 10 Feb 2010
After a lot of talk about it from Film Junk I finally got a chance to check out Werner Herzog's film. Surprisingly I'm amazed that he did Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, anyway...That's a review for another day.
I will have to say this on a side note, the guy is f****** touching and messing around with bears. Now I like my fair share of going on outdoor adventures, but this is fucking insane. Now that I got that out of my system, back to review this film.
I did find the movie pretty spectacular, I get the fact that yes he did mess around with bears, and yes he was being pretty careless, but I also saw that while he was doing what he loved, he was so happy.
I mean this was his life basically, and I love documentaries about that, about people who have such a passion for something. I do love Werner Herzog's approach to the film, he doesn't try to make Timothy Treadwell come out to be this right or smart person I mean you get to hear testimony from people who called him reckless or down right stupid.
Yes, he was trying to go out into the wild and mess with bears, but Herzog also tries to show a man who was passionate about this world of nature and bears. I think this is one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time, probably even ever.
I mean it's just a story about a man who died, even though some might think he was reckless, but died doing something he loved.
