Review of Gringo (2018) by Rebecca31 — 13 Mar 2018
Gringo is your typical crime movie where one thing goes horribly wrong and is quickly followed by a whole parade of equally horrible events where everything and anything can and will go spectacularly wrong. But don't worry because David Oyelowo is there to make it hilarious by reacting to every ridiculous event in an over the top and hysterical manner you can't help but laugh at.
David Oyelowo is a mild-mannered business man who accidentally gets involved with a Mexican drug lord. How will the ordinary man cope in such a situation? About as well as you'd expect. The first 30 - 40 minutes sets up all the necessary plot points, allowing you to almost predict everything that's about to happen. Unfortunately this has to be the most boring and bland plot set up ever. Don't let the opening scene fool you, the first act is enough to put you into a deep sleep and in my case it very nearly did. If you manage to fight off sleep for this long then settle down for a crime story that keeps the laughs coming. The plot is so bonkers you're guaranteed to find some of it amusing. David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron were having fun, their performance was funny and it's not often you see them in this kind of role. The addition of Sharlto Copley will improve any film and in the case of Gringo it's enough to give it a whole extra star. Entertaining in the moment and pretty forgettable afterwards. Recommended if you've nothing better to watch this weekend.
