Review of Gringo (2018) by Wayne K — 12 Nov 2018
In my opinion, one the most underrated films of the year, Gringo might not be considered high art, but it was a hell of a lot of fun, and I thought it did a great job juggling the multiple plot line, and it was always fun when they intersected.
David Oyelowo gives a fantastic performance as a man in way above his head, struggling for breath in a world that seems to be dumping on him at every opportunity. Things escalate and escalate until the inevitable climax, and it's always interesting to see how much further our hero will be pushed before he decides that enough is enough.
I loved the supporting cast, especially the slimy Joel Edgerton and the vicious, acid-tongued Charlize Theron, and while it might not be the most original or surprising of movies, I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would, considering the plethora of harsh reviews it attracted, but I've read a lot of opinions similar to mine from people who take the movie for what it is: A mad caper that doesn't aim to be profound, but certainly tries to keep us entertained at all time.
And I'm glad to say that, for me at least, it did.
