Review of Grindhouse (2007) by Sam N — 21 Apr 2012
Tarantino and Rodriguez have been making exploitation-styled films for the modern day: both Kill Bill's, From Dusk Til Dawn, even Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, and the list goes on.
However, this time around, they give us a great satire/tribute to their inspirations: the "grindhouse" theater expirience.
They even make it complete with fake movie trailers and ads between the features!
Shown back to back, it was a helluva ride!
Rodriguez' Planet Terror is more of a wild adrenaline ride through the sci-fi/horror genres. It aims to be more of a parody of the exploitation films of the old days, ramping up the gore and violence and "far-fetchedness", and just making it campy as hell. But, still wildly entertaining. I caught myself hollaring and laughing and cheering the whole time.
Tarantino's, though slow, prooves to perfect the formula for his piece. Death Proof is a great "women get revenge"/car chase exploitation crossover. Kurt Russell was born for that role.
Each of the movie trailers made the expirience that much more fun. Great segments from rob zombie, eli roth, and even edgar wright (of "shaun of the dead" fame)!
Though it really has no message, or deep meaning, it's still a great and thoroughly enjoyable ride! perfect!
A just to boot: one of the fake movie trailers is actually going to be made: Machete!
