Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by David K — 17 Aug 2008
This is a very fascinating portrayal of two very unique and interesting individuals; The Beales. Directed by the Maysles Brothers, "Grey Gardens" is basically a slice of life piece. The camera follows these two women around in their shoddy East Hampton mansion where they live with racoons, fleas, and who knows how many cats.
A great look at an era that has passed, the film fails to be interesting in the last half hour. Maybe it's because there's really no story and there is no variation throughout the whole film, but it left me feeling bored.
It's like watching a reality T.V. show that's an hour and a half long with no story. It works for a little bit but after a while I wanted to know what else was on. Regardless, "Grey Gardens" solidified the Beale's place in aristocratic history and introduced them to the outside world in the best way they could be shown; the real way.
