Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Christopher P — 03 May 2009
I find the making of this film quite fascinating. you really wouldn't know they were related to jackie if it wasn't for the newspaper clipping intro at the beginning as they only mention a campaign for "jack kennedy" once, and make no other mention to jackie.
I would also be interested in hearing what the maysles thought themselves of their subjects. did they see it as strange or as farcical as everyone else? how many shots of little edie do we have prepping herself for this "documentary" and making sure she entered the room at a certain angle, etc. how much goading (if any) did they need to do to coax performances out of the edies?
Big edie is my fave (and dare I say it, a voice of reason), but I think we all have a little bit of little edie in us somewhere.
