Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Emily B — 03 Mar 2010
Reality television before it was even invented. This strangely compelling documentary observing the lives of eccentric mother and daughter duo Edith and Edie, housebound in a dilapidated East Hampton mansion thanks to mother's ill health and the daughter's unfulfilled existence, is a claustrophobic watch tainted by the tragedy of wasted life and forgotten glamor.
A pivotal piece in the history of documentary making.
