Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Jj M — 20 Apr 2011
A tremendous documentary. Filmed independantly by the Maysles Brothers who were more than just intrigued by the lives of two relations of Jackie Kennedy, a mother and her daughter, who live in effective squalor but teem with eccentricity and a brimful of homely character. I initially linked the film from a quote used in a song by Stars called 'the woods'. It's sums up their lives really (spoken by Edie Beale):
"Oh, it's a sea of leaves.
If you lose something.
You can't find it again.
It drops to the bottom.
It was my scarf.
I'll never get it again.
The best scarf I ever owned.
The most beautiful color blue.
It dropped.
You know it fell out of my hand.
Hello?".
