Review of Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) by Traci B — 27 Nov 2010
Despite the returning director and some returning cast members (including the leads), the film manages to make every wrong turn a sequel can make. The most glaring problem is suspension of disbelief. I like the original Gremlins because while it is a totally silly and ridiculous premise, it manages to come off kind of realistic because it sets up its rules and follows them in the film.
I buy the premise and I stick with it. This movie just ups the zaniness, puts it in New York to give a bigger and "better" setting, and throws all the realism out of the door. The believable characters and the charm of the original are totally lacking here, and even the returning cast members seem kind of worthless here.
Things that were simple, like Gizmo accidentally getting wet causing the chain of events in the first film to get rolling are totally silly here...a broken water fountain that follows Gizmo no matter where he runs.
The offspring are completely unbelievable as well...they are so over the top from the get go. Lastly, I am really not a fan of breaking the fourth wall, if you're gonna do it, make it subtle at least.
..but this film keeps shoving it in your face that it is a movie. Maybe people like that sort of thing, but this one was just too outrageous for me to buy the whole premise.
