Review of Gremlins (1984) by Demetris H — 23 Dec 2010
Classic xmas flick. Gremlins is one of the few films I can think of that was advertised as a family film yet suprised me with amount of horror it actually contained. Introducing probably one of the most adorable creature in film (ewoks aside), Gizmo the mogwai, we are quickly shown how a innocent creature can quickly become a menace to a whole town.
Considering how old this film is, I have to say the animatronics and special effects were exceptional. Even though I knew the Gremlins were just rubber and make up, they still managed to give me a shiver down my spine every time they grinned at the screen. THe whole film is just peppered with dark humour - this allows us to see the Gremlins not as blood thirsty monsters but more like mischievious little devils whose sole concern is causing havoc and having a laugh whilst doing it.
Overall this is a vintage xmas flick...filled with memorable moments and some brilliant characters.
