Review of Gregory's Girl (1980) by Gareth M — 17 May 2009
This was quite a surprise to me, in the sense of how good it was. A coming of age teeny film about a boy fancing a girl football player....girls playing football better than men, half expecting "bend it like beckham" without the issues raised in that film.
However this hits home as very authetic, very real and is often very very funny with its sweet well natured humour. Claire Grogan playing the slightly less popular girl (who of course with hindsight we knew would become 80's totti, and significantly "Kochanski" in Red Dwarf.
Techinacally its filled full of cliches, hapless lads, superior lasses, and the reasonable twist that he settles for 2nd best to find its what he really wanted.
Its not going to break any boundaries, or set any new ground, and its not especially that long a film but its throughly enjoyable throughout, and will no doubt bring a smile to your face much more than 99.9% of american modern teen comedies.
