Review of Greenberg (2010) by Chris M — 21 Aug 2010
Meant to be in the awkward vein similar to his previous work "Squid and the Whale", Baumbach is successful in keeping the awkward level high throughout the entire film. Unfortunately, the overall plot nor the cast don't have the charm nor the ability (except for Gerwig) to get the audience to actually sympathize with their "desperate" circumstances.
Ben Stiller is provided a rather complex character to portray, but he lacks the acting subtlety to be effective outside of his moments of rage and anger. Greta Gerwig fares much better as a woman that is lost and finds herself in a rather difficult situation.
The rest of the supporting cast don't make a big enough impression either because they're barely seen, or their dialogue (Rhys Ifans) seems rather inconsequential.
