Review of Greenberg (2010) by Jeffrey G — 16 Jan 2011
The best comedy-drama of 2010. I don't put much stock in awards shows, and the fact that Greenberg wasn't even nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Comedy reinforces that. In the face of the cliche and conventional romances and friendships that most films go to, Greenberg takes one of the more realistic approaches to relationships in recent years.
Ben Stiller gives perhaps his best performance, playing an extremely unlikable asshole. Compared to other film assholes, he's one I can see (and see a little bit of in myself) in real life. Greta Gerwig is such a unique actress, a professional who feels at times non-professional, which really sells her performance.
This isn't a film that will click with everyone, and some might find the character of Greenberg to be too unlikable to get past, but it's well worth watching no matter which side you land on by its end.
