Review of Greenberg (2010) by Ricardo A — 29 Oct 2013
You have to stay with Greenberg in the sense of being patient with it. Baumbach in his afterword describes it as being his attempt to construct an Updike, Bellow or Roth-like, cinematic experience. And I think he succeeds courtesy not only of his own direction and first-class script-writing but also the high quality, well-paced and nuanced performances of Stiller, Gerwig and Ifans especially.
But my main advice is to keep with and don't try and wish the main characters to be what they are not. Take them on their own terms and you'll gain much from observing how they negotiate their way through this pivotal time in their lives.
