Review of Green Room (2016) by Bill S — 12 Jul 2016
A down on their luck punk band The Ain't Rights are booked to play a gig at a neo-nazi bar. On their way out, they inadvertently stumble upon something they were not meant to see. Forced into the bar's green room, they realize that they are outgunned and outnumbered.
The only way to escape may be to fight their way out. This film is depressing as hell while still managing to be thrilling, tense, and brutal. Patrick Stewart is frightening as Darcy, the head of the neo-nazis, but for my money the standouts are Anton Yelchin as the Pat, bassist for The Ain't Right's, and Imogen Poots as Amber, a redneck who is forced to team up with the band.
Imogen is really uglied up here and looks downright homely, but still manages to emerge as one hell of a great, ass-kicking cinematic heroine. Green Room marks the second time Yelchin and Poots have teamed up since Fright Night, and to no surprise their chemistry is still great and they make for one hell of a duo.
Green Room is not at all what I expected it to be. Don't expect a film all about beating the shit out of some neo-nazis....you won't get that here. It's a very well crafted film that manages to entertain, surprise, and shock while subtly delivering a few chuckles here and there.
It's definitely a great film, though it most certainly wont be for everyone's tastes. Buckle Up.
