Review of Green Lantern (2011) by Andrew H — 13 Jun 2013
Not great, not even good....satisfying however, and that's still something to be appreciated from the comic movie genre.
Solid C.
Update: I may have been a bit harsh, I can't help it. I hold these movies to a slightly higher standard because they are supposed to have more to prove. We're not talking about some dreamt up narrative here, we're talking about years of history and depth of these characters come to life on the big screen. They need to be done justice. I'm not a comic book fan, I'm not a Marvel or DC fan. I am a fan of the genre. I love superhero cartoons and series and I did read a few of the comics when I was younger.
I felt that Green Lantern as a movie didn't even make the effort to be good and it wasn't about the acting per se, but more so the plot/content and directing (not that I could do better), I think that movies like this need to be left to certain directors who know how to make it come to life because they love/like it. Joss Whedon and Bryan Singer (to some extent) come to mind. Hell, I believe JJ Abrams would also make a kickbutt superhero movie as well, as long as he was at some point truly invested in the backstory.
The other directors and producers who do it are obviously completely in it for the money and not much more and that translates directly to how we as fans and as an audience perceive it....that is, not well.
Anyway, at least imho it wasn't terrible. There's actually good replay value as I have watched it a few times after the initial watching and it wasn't bad. I'm just disappointed as it could have been so much better.
