Review of Green Lantern (2011) by Jared N — 25 Jul 2013

A lackluster story saved only by the fact that Green Lantern has some of the most interesting super powers in any comic series. This is probably one of Ryan Reynolds' worst movies, although there are still a decent amount of exciting moments. I'll be honest with you though, the main reason to watch this movie is to see Ryan Reynolds do things like fight the villain with a green materialized Hot Wheels track and car.

The Good: Green Lantern is by far one of the coolest superheroes by his very nature. He can create pretty much anything with his mind and use it to kill people. Pretty awesome, right? There is some great special effects in this movie in the combat scenes and on other planets that definitely shine. The new style of suit is definitely an upgrade from previous ones. The flying scenes (in the air craft) are excellent and make you smile as you think of scenes from Top Gun.

The Bad: Hal starts off as unlikable and pretty much stays unlikable throughout the movie. There is a huge potential for a great love story that is started here, but eventually falls flat and does not get any traction. The story is bumpy at best and very poorly paced and the villain is absolutely ridiculous. This movie is so comic book like that you can practically feel the pages...and wish you could turn them faster to skip ahead to more interesting adventures with Hal. There is also a major flaw of this movie that exists outside of it and that is the fact that this is Ryan Reynolds' THIRD character in the superhero universe. He plays Wade, who turns into Deadpool in the X-Men world for Marvel, which is completely and utterly confusing. Even looking around this fact, this is a slow, uneventful movie that rarely has the audience invested in the character at all. There is also a huge amount of great character lore not used in this movie at all, although I will spare you my nerd rage on all of the specifics.
