Review of Green Lantern (2011) by Russell H — 06 Jul 2017
With such a solid cast and talented people working front and behind the camera, one would think that this is going to be a kick-ass superhero movie. Although it's not without moments and strong production values, and Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have great chemistry together, the film itself is neither exciting nor memorable.
It's tonally all over the place, going from serious to goofy to scary to lightweight within a few minutes; there are scenes and moments in it that seem as if something is missing; some of the dialogue are often on-the-nose and unnatural, and the visual effects look flat and less than sensational.
There are a couple of good performances (Reynolds is by far the best thing about the film) and Martin Campbell knows how to stage action set-pieces. It's not terrible, but considering the people who are involved in it, it's not as good as it should've been.
