Review of Green Lantern (2011) by Mike S — 09 Apr 2014
If a comic-book movie is going to work, it has to be slightly tongue-in-cheek. Comic-book superheroes are inherently silly in some ways. Film makers have to acknowledge this with witty asides to the audience that lets us know that THEY know this is make-believe.
Green Lantern takes itself too seriously. It's already dealing with a back story that is far-fetched and hard to swallow. To take itself too seriously is to invite chuckles and disbelief. And this movie takes itself too seriously.
It needed a few more chuckles and less emoting. While the visuals are done well and the acting is passable, the script is just silly. The plot is overloaded with exposition and no one's motives are believable.
The whole premise of the lantern, the "power of will" that is the basis of the hero's superpowers, and the things he can do with his magic ring are beyond belief, even for a superhero movie.
