Review of Green Lantern (2011) by Matthew F. J — 29 Jan 2015
I think I may be a little too old for that kind of film. Seriously it was a bleak film treated with little passion but countless mistakes of production choices. Filled with avalanche of CGI and green lights, the film fell completely to achieve a heroic dimension, looking simply like an overcooked and hastily produced popcorn attraction for 12 years old boys.
From the often strong director Martin Campbell who's been delivering solid entertaining films for the last 20 years, one is allowed to expect something more meaty and consistent. The cast is ok Reynolds is likeable enough as always and Mark Strong is as good as always.
Technically the film is very well produced, the camera work is good and the choice of lightning is debatable but solid. The cinematography is unfortunately not great, due to an overuse of green, the film tends to be very shady and dark which personally annoyed me.
Looking to approach the material in a more colorful and cartoonish way isn't a bad idea but here it fails to be adequate with a film that would have gained in accepting a more realistic approach such as Nolan did with his Dark Knight trilogy.
The film is not a complete waste of time for sure but it shows that too many executive had their saying in the final cut and unfortunately the film suffers a lot from it. An empty and dull exercise of transposing one of the coolest superhero comic character onto the silver screen.
Disappointing.
