Review of Great Expectations (2012) by Mark H — 10 Dec 2012
Classic story, classic string of existing examples, but still the director, cast and crew made a mess of this. Annoyingly short focal lengths gave it a 'made for TV' feel throughout. Embarrassing overacting by the adult pip character and Helena BC was dreadful and unconvincing as the elderly, poorly made-up Miss Haversham.
The scenery and historical correctness was laughable; outdoor fires burned pointlessly on the daylight, working class characters inappropriately addressed upper class peers, lawyers shouted at their valuable clients etc etc.
Nothing, including the screenplay, was believable! Only great performances by Ralph Fiennes and the Estella character saved an otherwise pointless 2 hours. One to miss!
