Review of Great Expectations (1998) by Donna . — 16 Jul 2009
"She'll only break your heart, it's a fact. And even though I warn you, you'll still pursue her. Ain't love grand?".
This film is a love story, a rag to riches story and a coming of age story all rolled into one, all of which it achieves very beautifully.
Throughout the movie we see young, poor and awkward Finn grow into a successful, self-assured and charming young man.
The film is most touching in its capturing of Finn's love and yearning for the beautiful Estella, who has been raised by Ms Dinsmoor to break mens hearts.
The movie is very stylised and everything is green! But as Finn said at the beginning of the film, he is telling the story the way that he remembers it.
I liked the artwork by Italian artist Francesco Clemente, shown throughout the movie, which enhances the films dreamy quality and the drawings of Estella helped to capture the inner Estella who Finn saw which kept him holding on..
All the performances are wonderful and both the soundtrack and score are brilliant. A FANTASTIC film!
