Review of Great Expectations (1998) by Matthew F. J — 27 Dec 2013
I am going to rate this movie independently from the book completely. It would be unfair to cast judgement against the book which is renowned as an all time classic. Whilst I wouldn't put this movie on that classic level, it was very good.
Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Bancroft and Robert De Niro all pull off their roles with great authenticity. Ethan Hawke does a remarkable job of playing both the younger, naive and innocent Finnegan Bell as well as the older and more confident version.
Gwyneth Paltrow is at her sultry best and I can't think of a better actress to pull of the elusive character trait of Estella. Robert De Niro's role was brief but he didn't let go of his usual high standards.
Anne Bancroft was impressive as Ms. Dinsmoor. A highly recommended watch.
