Review of Great Expectations (1998) by Shweta K — 25 Apr 2010
In my opinion, this is a very underrated movie. Ethan does a great job as the Finn Bell. Gywenth did a good job as well. Ethan plays the young, poor Finn Bell who falls in love with a girl of a much higher status, Estella.
They meet as young kids and we see them grow apart and then by chance or fate meet as adults. Is their love for each other still strong enough after so many years? This is the first film I saw Chris Cooper and I was blown away by his performance.
De Niro had a small but memorable role as the escaped convict that is helped by the young Finn Bell. Anne Bancroft did a great as the crazy, left at the alter, Mrs. Dinsmore. Alfonso Cuaron did a wonderful job with the setting of the movie, taking us from rugged Gulf Coast to the glitzy New York City.
The movie does a good job showing us that being rich is not the most important thing in love. Love in the end has a way of finding its true owner. The movie looks beautiful, due to the great work of the Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron and the soundtrack is wonderful.
Loved the love story and the new telling of Charles Dicken's classic tale.
