Review of Grease (1978) by Baurushan J — 31 Jan 2014

Now to be honest, I have never seen the original musical but this movie kicked fucking ass and I fucking loved it. The movie is supposed to take place in the 1950s but this was made in the 1970s so I don't really know the trend differences since I wasn't alive then.

The story is about Danny Zuko played by John Travolta who meets up with Sandy Olsson played by Olivia Newton-John whilst on holiday at the beach. But once fall comes, it is time for Danny to go back to Rydell High School and Sandy to go back to Australia but when her parents have a change of plan, she is also sent to Rydell as well.

With Danny reuniting with his bad-boy T-Birds and Sandy befriending the rebel Pink Ladies, neither of them know that they are in the same school until they are surprised to meet one another but due to each other's surrounding environment, they want to try and impress one another.

This is where the musicals come in and I mean it, they are all over the place in this movie. They are incredibly fast, catchy and seemingly never get old especially the intro which jacks you up every time you hear it because it sucks you into the movie and I was brave enough to sit though the whole film as the song appeared at the end credits as well finishing off what had started.

I loved the high school environment of this film because there aren't just cardboard cutouts of jocks, bullies, nerds, cheerleaders and so on. They are more realistic as the jocks and bullies are both similar sided, known as rebels, nerds are more of geeks and some of the main female leads including Sandy are the cheerleaders so it makes sense that she's actually useful to the school environment and not a plain wuss.

It has been a long time since I saw this; I liked it then and I liked it now as well. Grease gets a 10/10.
