Review of Gray Matters (2007) by Nick R — 05 Mar 2009
One of my pals at Uni told me about this little gem, and it was actually quite refreshing in the chick flick states. Imagine me and You is the kind of Indie British version, and it makes no apologies for being slightly more real life...
Gray matters is not particularly true to life and is the "coming out" scenario I guess a lot of gay people dream about - the lack of real toughness of the situation for many people is exempt, especially when coming out to family members. It avoids the hostility that parents may harbor for instance, although perhaps for many its easier than the taboo nature of "coming out" has.
Its a complex subject but it does well in showing why there is no reason it can't be cute. And kitsch and cute it is.
