Review of Gravity (2013) by Jacob D — 15 Nov 2014
One day they'll make a science fiction film with incredible special effects, cinematography, and at long last: A great story. Sadly, the story and human character arc in this film are really thin..
. We're talking "Avatar" looks like "War & Peace" compared to this film's story. Despite the token human, the film is a great achievement in faking outer space for the cinema.
Alfonso Cuaron deserves his reputation. Yes, I did finally get around to watching this film (with 7.1 Surround Sound headphones too, which I highly suggest) in order to get into the "Gravity" vs "Interstellar" debates.
Ultimately I am 'Team Interstellar' because we got a much better story... We're still not there yet for a truly great man-in-space opus, but if "Gravity" was Phase One, "Interstellar" is Phase Two, then we're closer than we've ever been.
.. or not... "Apollo 13" is certainly better than this film... And "2001: A Space Odyssey" is much closer to being an "Earthlings in Space" masterpiece... Ok, the genre still needs work, would you be quiet already.
