"I'LL SOON MEET HER." From October 8, 2013. Gracie and I went to the movies and saw "Gravity" tonight. Posthaste, please go and see it. Not only it's a must-see-now, you must see it in IMAX and 3D. I don't know if we got senior citizen's discount, but we paid $14.25 each for the 7:00 p.m. show. Matinee would be cheaper.
Gravity is only 1.5 hours long, and it's worth the time to see it on the biggest screen. Not since "Avatar" does a film use 3D and the latest cinematic technology as appropriate, not gratuitous. Not since "Life of Pi" can a story move the audience both to ask, "If it happens to me, would I fight hard to survive?" and to search deeply into oneself and come out believing in having a soul.
"I'll soon meet her" may not be an accurate quotation; I plan to see the film again to get it right. It's part of Dr. Ryan Stone's monologue in the face of disaster in space. Dr. Stone is referring to her daughter who died very young. Uneducated in faith, and, thus, an atheist by default, the character of Sandra Bullock articulates the wish, if not belief, she'd see her daughter in death.
The film director, Alfonso Cuaron, is one of the three amigos of the Mexican cinema (the others are Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu). Cuaron wrote the screenplay with his son, Jonas. While the script could be tighter, the production design has religious references (the St. Christopher icon in the Russian space station, the golden Buddha in the Chinese one). Actually, those references are the reason I'd like to see the film again. Just like "The Sixth Sense," I feel I need a second viewing to see what I'd missed.
"Gravity" is ultimately a human drama taking on the meaning of life and soul -- of the meaning of all these -- in the vacuum of space, of nothingness. The Cuarons, father and son, and the whole film production could not have told and shown what's meaningful more beautifully. Please take great care of yourself, and thank you for all you do.
