Review of Gravity (2013) by Andy C — 28 Nov 2014
"Gravity" is the greatest SF movie shot by Alfomso Caron who are the Mexican director of the world-famous work, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". It was screened as a opening product at the 70th Venice International Film Festival in August 2013. Considering the quality, it was natural that "Gravity" was nominated ten sections and received seven awards at the 86th Academy Awards! Except it, this movie gained a lot of prizes. The reason why it was praised so much is the fidelity. I can't imagine how it was created, but for this film, CG technology and knowledges about the space were used effectively a lot. Thanks of the effort of the production staff, the quality surprised even space professional NASA and real astronauts.
The stage of this story is a dark, severe and vast place, the universe. The main character is only two persons. One is an astronaut, Lieutenant Matt Kowalski acted by George Timothy Clooney, and the other is a scientist who don't have enough knowledge about there, Dr. Ryan Stone acted by Sandra Annette Bullock. They get involved in some troubles while they are carrying out their missions.
I watched it in theater, but if you didn't, it is not a big problem. Of course the powerful sound and the dynamic screen of theater make the impact increase more than watch on TV in your house, but it is enough to enjoy it even if on TV. At first, I didn't expect so much about the contents of it before the movie was started. However, the moment it started I was attracted the screen. The sound, picture, and acting drew me into their world. There are no air in space, and it means there are no materials to convey sound. To tell the audience the atmosphere of there, this film uses even such a weak point effectively which a restriction of sound expression. Also the acting of Sandra and the camera work were excellent. They made me think as if the view showed on the screen was real. I was very moved by all of the techniques, acting and story.
If you have not watched this greatest movie, you should watch it right now!
